Selecting a Moissanite

Moissanite was first discovered in 1893 by a French scientist named Henri Moissan, who later won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He discovered microscopic particles of the gem that would eventually bear his name in Arizona, in a crater created by a meteorite.

Natural moissanite is incredibly rare, so moissanite gemstones used in jewellery today are laboratory-created.

Moissanite gemstones are engineered to be visually similar to diamonds, but are compositionally and visually quite different from a real diamond. The durability, brilliance, and colour of the two gems are quite distinct.

Because they are grown in controlled environments using advanced technology, moissanites require absolutely no mining to produce. Therefore, their origins are easily traceable and are 100% conflict free.

Compared with natural gemstones, lab created moissanites have a smaller carbon footprint and result in less environmental impact. Fine jewellery made with moissanites and recycled metals is a responsible, ethical choice that more and more modern enlightened consumers are making.

Diamond mining has many detrimental impacts on the environment including soil erosion, deforestation and eco system destruction. During the mining process the soil, water and air surrounding a mine become polluted affecting humans and animal resources.

Moissanite vs. Diamond

Gemstone durability is measured on the Mohs Scale of Hardness, which assesses a gem’s ability to withstand surface scratching.

On the Mohs scale, moissanite scores a 9.25, second only to diamond which has a score of 10. This makes it one of the hardest substances on earth, and very suitable for everyday wear. Other diamond alternatives are not only visually inferior to moissanite gemstones, but score very much lower on the Mohs scale, making them entirely unsuitable for everyday wear.

Brilliance refers to the appearance of light reflected from the interior of the gem.
Moissanite gemstones exhibit a different kind of brilliance than diamonds do, as their faceting pattern is different. With a refractive index from 2.65 to 2.69, which is higher than a diamond, moissanite gemstones exhibit a more fiery and brighter sparkle, beloved by aficionados who prefer a more brilliant stone.

I simply adore my moissanite diamonds, they look stunning with both formal and informal clothing.
